Tallahassee comes to life at night with its collection of craft breweries, CollegeTown hot spots, and several places with sophisticated rooftop cocktails.

Whether the mood calls for a nostalgic drink from a bygone era or putting on your red shoes to dance to the blues, the capital city sways to a rhythm of its own once the sun goes down.

While the city’s nightlife offers many options from sports bars, night clubs, gay bars, tiki bars and pool halls, there is a new option in town: the hookah lounge The Spot on Gaines Street just east of Railroad Avenue.

Owner and promoter Joe Morris said he opened this new lounge  because it fills a niche.

“Tallahassee just needed a new hookah spot with a more chill scene and vibe for our people,” Morris said. “We host brunches, night and day parties, and sports watching events. I even brought one of my good friends along to provide hookahs. My girlfriend is also the manager and keeps everything running smoothly.”

One of Morris’ good pals is Remi Sawyer, the owner of the mobile 8fifty hookah truck.  He provides entertainment spots with flavorful hookahs all over Tallahassee. His new endeavor is at The Spot.

“The owner, Joe, that brought me and my business partner in to run and manage and provide 8fifty hookah,” Sawyer said. “We see all different age groups 18 plus coming together having a good time with great music. It’s definitely an experience I’m glad 8fifty hookahs can be a part of.”

This can now be a go-to spot for college students who enjoy hookahs.

The Spot has 2-for-1 drinks until 8:30 p.m., so you might want to get there before that to take advantage. It also has a chef on Tuesdays serving up street tacos at an affordable price.

A lot folks who have been to The Spot can agree on two things: it’s always a vibe and the food and drinks are great.

Jocelyn Jenkins, The Spot’s manager, says it has been a learning experience for her.

“Managing a bar restaurant from scratch has been difficult as far as implementing new systems and organizing payroll for 15-plus girls,” Jenkins said. “My boyfriend found The Spot back in August and I’ve been helping it develop since. We’ve had guests from Miami, Chicago and Atlanta comment on the vibe and scenery.

“People love it here. The building is actually 80 years old. The owner’s father built it. A lot of homeless people have resided there for the past 30 years. A lot of the stores over here feed and clothe them,” she added.

Tyhanah Harris is one customer who never misses a Tuesday.

“I remember the first time I had tacos on Tuesday, I was a little nervous because they looked too good,” Harris said. “I bit into it and fell in love with it. People usually turn up at Cancuns on Tuesday, but The Spot has these red lights and it’s just more of a vibe. I love it.”
